NEW YORK 1850 CENSUS

This is the first year we see exactly who is in each family, their ages, state they were born in and relationship to each other. I am again listing all the folks by County. Again, most of the New Englanders are Putnams, the Dutch folks are Putmans, but they are recorded both as Putman and Putnam. Sometimes the folks get listed as Pitman, Rutman and such, but we try to find them all one way or the other. I will use the spelling as it most likely should be, and mention in the text if it were indexed wrongly.

THE PUTNAMS of ESSEX COUNTY

You’ll need help here. Heck, I need help here. Most everyone here in Essex County is descended from an Asa Putnam. Problem is there seems to be two of them, and both cousins out of Vermont, and frankly I think Eben gets them a bit mixed up as far as kids go. I haven’t found anyone on either line, so I am not at all certain. Be real careful here. The first Asa is number 897, son of Tarrant number 334 and Mary Porter. This line is Asa > Tarrant > Israel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. Asa was born in Danvers, Mass. December 28, 1763, and moved with his folks to Orange County Vermont. He married Mary (Polly) Fowler in Corinth, Orange County on January 2, 1792. His children seem to be Polly born VT 1793, Prudence born VT 1795, Elisha born 1796, Hiram born NY 1798 and William Henry Harrison born 1813 NY. This Asa died September 11, 1839, and Polly died May 10, 1858. Then there was another Asa (no number assigned as Eben knew little even of his folks. This Asa was a son of Thomas Putnam (481) and Susannah Stone of Bethel, Windsor County Vermont. This line goes Asa > Thomas > Holyoke > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John. This Asa was born in June 1780 and died in 1865. He married Elizabeth Gallup. According to Eben, in his sketches, the children were Sabin, Mary, Calvin, Joseph, Curtis, Jane, Charles, Francis, Henry and Harrison (probably a single guy Henry Harrison, very common after the War of 1812).

JONATHAN PUTNAM  Crown Point, Essex County

He is 17 NY and living at home with his mother Sarah Mariah Cram 41 VT and sister Eliza 18 NY. They are listed under Sarah Maria's second husband Asa Cram 41 MA. The census taker wrote Jonathan and his sister Eliza down as being Crams but they are really Putnams. They are children of the mystery John Putnam of Plattsburgh up in Clinton County. Not sure who John was. He might be the John Putnam in Lewis in 1850 and 1860 but not sure. They were divorced in 1845, and Sarah Maria (Southwick) Putnam married Asa Cram. His dad John Putnam is listed shortly in Lewis, Essex County and is by himself. Jonathan Southwick Putnam will be here in 1860 with a wife and kids and then they're off to Jackson County, Iowa in 1870.

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Willsboro, Essex County

He is 20 NY and lives in a boarding house. He might belong to the above Daniel, but I don’t think so. Too old. This is probably a dual listing for Elisha’s son listed in Essex, Essex County.

NELSON PUTNAM  York, Livingston County

He is 25 NY and his wife Melvina Dunn 20 NY. They will be in Genesee County Michigan in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. I think he could be a son of William and Elizabeth Putman from Erie County. Dutch folks. Matt Putnam thinks that he is Nelson Victor Putnam a son of Barney Putnam and Margaret Burkhart. Another New York Dutch family. Now in 1850, Barney and family are in Mount Morris in Livingston County only 10 miles away from York. That’s starting to look like a better family relationship. In 1860 Nelson is in Genesee Township in Genesee count and Barney and crew are then 28 miles away in Argentine, Michigan. Then in 1960 and 1970 Nelson has the middle initial ‘V.’, which probably stands for Victor and that puts him right in Barney’s lap. So, I now think Nelson is Nelson Victor Putnam a son of Barney and Margaret. But, it’s a big but, Nelson is divorced in Flint, Genesee County Michigan in 1880 and will die there in 1886. That record says his father is William Putnam. So…mabey I was right in the first place when I figured William was his daddy. But maybe William is Barney’s first or middle name. I’m gonna leave the Michigan censuses alone and put the questions right here in New York.

GEORGE PUTMAN  Elbridge, Onondaga County

George is 20 NY and boarding. The above Elizabeth might be his sister. I don’t have the names of whom they are boarding with. George’s middle name starts with W. Could be Washington could be Winslow according to Find-a-grave. There is a record of him being born in Onondaga County in about 1830. There was a Peter Putnam here in Elbridge in 1830. Not completely sure but we suspect that he is Peter # 1286 > Andrew > Elisha > Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John. Peter's wife is Susannah Keep. She died on 22 Jan 1827 in Brutus, New York. Brutus is right next door to Elbridge but over the county line in Cayuga County. Also, Peter's son Calvin Putnam is said to have died on 31 Nov. 1834 in Brutus, which would mean that Peter would have been somewhere nearby in 1830. This is probably him. Peter is missing in 1840 but a few of his older sons can be found living in Rochester in the 1840 census. Peter seems to have had a second wife, name unknown, after Susanna died in 1827. This would, we think, be the parents of George. Peter split or something and went to Michigan. This George and maybe the Elizabeth here in town stayed around with either their mom or some relative and didn’t go to Michigan with their daddy. He will marry Harriet Gale October 2, 1854 in Lake County Ohio and they are in Belmont, Allegany County New York in 1865. They will be in Lake County Ohio in 1870, Ashtabula County Ohio in 1880. There is another Alanson though who is closer in age who was a grandson of Joel and Elizabeth Putnam and that Alanson was born here in Oswego County and will be in Syracuse with his mother in 1855 and near her in 1860.
